Returning to sport?
With weekend warriors, children and adolescents returning to local indoor and outdoor sporting fields after enforced layoffs caused the coronavirus, the risk of injury has never been higher.
With thousands of competitors at all levels having to find alternative ways to maintain their fitness during the closure of training facilities (both in and outdoor), a gradual return to full training and match play over a four to six week period is required at a minimum to reduce the likelihood of injury.
A gradual increase in intensity and volume is essential, focusing on key components of each sport including and not limited to:
- Acceleration/Increases in speed
- Decelerations/Decreases in speed
- High speed running/Sprinting
- Change of directions
- Jumping
A case in point was the AFL earlier this year, where injury rates increased prior to matches resuming with only 3.5 weeks of formal training.
